Was there a chance of escaping this destiny? Perhaps there was some chance out of his control, like in the flip of a coin, hence “luck” (As opposed to pure unyielding fate, as in a coin with heads on both sides maybe). Or perhaps he could have changed how the outcome occurred… I would love to give examples but if any classmates looked at this, they could see some of our evidence for the debate ahead of time, but I’m sure it’s obvious that Oedipus made choices on this path.
And if those choices weren’t real and he was fated to make only one choice every time, is he not just as a mindless drone? I think the story is far more impactful when you think he’s the one that just stumbled into this horrible situation, rather than being controlled like a puppet. It seems far more like a tragedy that way, if he’s just incredibly unlucky.
This guy is definitely not in possession of a four leaf clover or a horseshoe!!
